  • How to Keep Your Pet Comfortable this Summer

Summer is quickly approaching us here in West Lafayette, IN, so prepare yourself and your pets now so you can both enjoy your days, in or outside of your apartment at Collegiate Communities. Marsteller and North are not pet-friendly areas, but we accept cats, dogs, birds, and fish in all other areas. Learn more about pet summer care in today’s blog.

Pets can be tough, but they, too, are susceptible to the elements. Ask your veterinarian for specific advice on how you can meet your pet’s specific needs, especially if you need advice on medical care or bathing techniques. But learn the basics, too! Refresh yourself on heatstroke symptoms in pets and make an easy-to-follow plan for you to follow in case you are to notice any of these symptoms during the summer.

Prepare your home for the summer, too. Keep plenty of water easily accessible to your pet at all times of the day, and keep the blinds closed so you can aid in naturally cooling down the room and those in it. Remember to never keep your pet in your car during the summer, even with the windows cracked. As you’re sorting these things out, consider rearranging your schedule a bit. Take your pet on walks at earlier or later times in the day so you can avoid the harshest rays of the sun during the hottest parts of the day.

Also think of how you can groom your pet to help them stay cool. Consider clipping the fur of pets with longer coats so they can feel lighter and airier. Cool them down with regular baths, too. Ask your veterinarian if your pet is easily susceptible to sunburn, and ask for recommendations on pet sunscreen. Be aware of summer insects, including fleas, ticks, and bees, and ask your vet for preventative techniques, medicines, and treatment tips.
